Nintendo released both its most recent hardware and software numbers for the Switch earlier today and if you haven’t looked them over already, you’ll likely be pretty impressed. While the Switch continues to thrive on its own, one of Nintendo’s oldest franchises happened to also break a new record in the process to close 2018.
As we reported earlier, Super Mario Odyssey, the most recent 3D platformer starring everyone’s favorite plumber which released back in 2017, has now sold 13.67 million copies in total. Not only does Super Mario Odyssey currently sit as the platform’s second most-sold title, but it also is now the best-selling 3D Mario game in history. For those unaware, the 3D Mario games in question are compromised of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Odyssey.
The previous best-selling Mario title out of this bunch was that of Super Mario Galaxy, which lifetime has sold 12.78 million copies. Considering the success of the Nintendo Wii back in the day, it should come as no surprise that Galaxy was the previous record holder. What’s impressive about Super Mario Odyssey already surpassing Galaxy though is that it hasn’t even been on the market for 18 months. As more Switch units continue to be sold over the coming years, you can surely bet that Odyssey will continue to sell in droves. By the time the Switch’s life cycle has ended, Super Mario Odyssey will likely be the top-selling 3D iteration of Mario by a huge margin. It’ll be more interesting to see if it can catch 2D Mario counterparts such as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World in the coming years.
As a personal note, I’m glad to see Odyssey doing so well because it’s–in my opinion–easily the best 3D Mario game of the bunch. While each new Mario jaunt brings something new and enjoyable to the table, Super Mario Odyssey is personally my favorite of them all. If you haven’t played it yet for some reason but own a Switch, do yourself a favor and pick it up.
